As established by School Board Policy IIA (Instructional Materials), Buena Vista City Public Schools (i) identifies instructional materials with explicit content, (ii) ensures parental notification of any instructional materials with sexually explicit content, (iii) permits parents to review all instructional materials with sexually explicit content, and (iv) ensures alternative instructional materials, that do not include sexually explicit content, are provided in a non-punative manner for any student whose parent so requests.
Lists of resources divided by grade and subject will be linked below when available. These lists will be routinely updated as BVCPS continues to review new materials.
BVCPS recognizes that parents should guide their children in the selection of choice instructional resources, and there are times when a resource may not align with their family values. In such situations, we invite parents to meet with the teacher to collaboratively select alternate recommendations or solutions.
If a teacher intends to use any resource that contains sexually explicit content, the school principal, or their designee, will notify the parent/guardian 30 days prior to the use of this material. Upon request, parents may have their child use alternative material in a non-punative manner that does not include sexually explicit content. Alternative material may not be available for AP, Dual Enrollment, or SOL exams. If parents choose to request alternative material for a class, they must notify the teacher at a minimum of one week prior to the date of the planned instruction.
Note: Not all of the resources are used at every school.
